The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 Group A racing car is a high-performance version of the Ford Sierra that was built in limited numbers between 1987 and 1990. It was designed to compete in Group A touring car racing, a popular form of motorsport in the 1980s and early 1990s.
The RS500 was developed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) division and the famous British motorsport firm, Cosworth. The car was based on the Ford Sierra, which was a popular family sedan in Europe. However, the RS500 was extensively modified to meet the demands of racing.
Under the hood, the RS500 was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine that was capable of producing up to 500 horsepower in race tune. This power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The RS500 also featured a number of aerodynamic upgrades, including a large rear spoiler and front splitter, to improve downforce and high-speed stability.
The RS500 was successful in touring car racing, particularly in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC). In the BTCC, the RS500 won the championship in 1988 and 1989, with drivers Andy Rouse and Robb Gravett respectively. In the ATCC, the RS500 won the championship in 1988 and 1990 with drivers Dick Johnson and Colin Bond.
Today, the Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 Group A is considered a classic racing car and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
