Toyota will officially enter the Australian Supercars Championship in 2026 with its GR Supra, marking a major milestone for the brand and the sport. This move will see Toyota compete alongside Ford and Chevrolet in the Gen3 era of the championship. The entry is a result of a long-standing ambition, and Toyota will field at least four cars, two of which will be run by the Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) team.
The GR Supra will be powered by Toyota’s 2UR-GSE V8 engine, the same unit used in the Lexus GT3 and the 2019 Dakar-winning HiLux. Toyota’s in-house design team in Melbourne has already begun development, using advanced CAD and VR technologies. This move is part of Toyota’s ongoing motorsport involvement, which includes other series like the Toyota GAZOO Racing Australia (TGRA) Scholarship Series and its dominance in international events like the World Endurance Championship and World Rally Championship.
This introduction promises to bring new competition dynamics to the Supercars Championship, with Toyota committed to a five-year involvement starting in 2026.
